Loadstone GPS - Navigation aid for blind mobile phone users

Loadstone GPS is GPS software for mobile phones guiding users in geographical location and navigation. The software is primarily developed to be a navigational assistant for blind and visually impaired people using screen readers such as Talks (TM) and Mobile Speak (TM).

Loadstone GPS is a free and open source software that runs on cellular phones using the Symbian (Series 60) operating system.

Story

Loadstone GPS can be used to find out information about the geographical environment where the user is located. With Loadstone GPS, users may look for:

  • The closest "points of interest"
  • Longitude and latitude coordinates
  • Identification data provided by the Mobile Mast (Cellular site) that the phone is currently using

Users may also share "points of interest" and use them in navigation. The "points of interest" are shared with an online PointShare Exchange repository.

How it was done

Loadstone GPS is developed by an international software development team. The motivation is to make life easier for blind people.

Technology used

To use the Loadstone GPS program in your mobile phone you need:

  • A Symbian (Series 60) mobile phone
  • A Bluetooth GPS receiver

You may also use a Bluetooth headset with the software.
