VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol and despite the complicated name, is simply another way of connecting a phone call. It is often referred to as Internet teplephony.

VoIP enables voice signals to be transmitted through the Internet network, rather than a separate telephone network. There are many VoIP compatible handheld devices, laptops and mobile phones which support VoIP calls.

The technology is not regulated however and there are several technical issues such as support for emergency mumbers“and improving reliability. In many countries, there are also legal aspects surrounding VoIP, such as taxation, roaming and hosting of VoIP services.
