GSM stands for Global System for Mobile communications and is the most widely used technology for mobile or cellular phones in the world today. More than 2 Billion people are using GSM, which brings high quality, secure, digital cellular connections. There are hundreds if not thousands of phones and other devices that can be used to communicate via GSM.

A licence is required to operate GSM networks, and the networks are relatively cheap to build. The key benefits of GSM systems have been open standards which means equipment from different companies will interoperate or work together, as well as support for services like SMS (short message service) or text messaging.

Operators can also introduce roaming services which mean subscribers can use their phones in different countries.
