Mobile phone communication has become indispensable in addressing the needs of victims of natural disasters and violent conflicts – connecting those in crisis with people who can help.
SMS is being used to coordinate evacuation efforts, to mobilize citizens to donate blood, and warn people of impending storms, volcanic eruptions, and even missile attacks. Images captured on camera and/or video phones document crisis situations, raising awareness and mobilizing action halfway across the globe. Charities have carried out large-scale SMS campaigns to raise funds for relief efforts.
